Developmental Editing
A developmental edit is the first edit a manuscript needs. It addresses internal consistency, structure, logical fallacies, as well as story and character where applicable. Not every piece of writing needs a developmental edit. Short documents and business materials can go straight to line editing.
Line editing
Line editing elevates syntax, clarity, voice, and transitions. After a line edit your writing will have perfect grammar and be free of redundancies and jargon.
Proofreading
Proofreading ensures perfect spelling, punctuation, capitalization, numeration, collation of footnotes, as well as stylistic consistency. It is the last edit a manuscript needs.
Sensitivity Editing
Also called authenticity editing. This type of editing ensures that writing does not misrepresent, stereotype, or promote bias against marginalized communities. It ensures the manuscript promotes language that is psychologically safe, inclusive, respectful, and welcoming, drawing on editorial guidance on sensitivity editing from the American Psychological Association, The Chicago Manual of Style, The Chicago Guide to Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation, and the ACES Society for Editing.
Fact-checking
Fact-checking is a labor-intensive process, and it should be started as soon as possible in the writing process. It not only double-checks names, dates, locations, and attribution of quotes, but also interpretations of data, cause and effect of events, characterizations of scientific or historical consensus, and explanations of complex concepts.
